In English traditional grammar, a phrasal verb is the combination of two or three words from different grammatical categories — a verb and a particle, such as an adverb or a preposition — to form a single semantic unit on a lexical or syntactic level. Examples: turn down, run into, sit are tens of thousands of them, and they are in everyday, constant use.

The CL-based analysis of the semantics of the phrasal verb constructions provides evidence for the compositional nature of phrasal verbs, showing that the multiple meanings can be systematically accounted for through the interaction of the polysemy networks of the component verbs and particles.

In its broad sense, the phrasal verb covers Verb + Particle Constructions (VPC) (e.g., pick up), Verb + Preposition Constructions (VPP) (e.g., run into), and particle-prepositional verbs (e.g., put up with).

This book focuses on VPCs, referred to as particle verbs and further categorized into directional, resultative, aspectual, and. Phrasal Verbs in Learner English: A Semantic Approach. A Study Based on a POS Tagged Spoken Corpus of Learner English Phrasal Verbs (PVs), understood as a verb and a particle, though very common in native speech, are reportedly difficult to learn by non-native speakers (NNSs) of English (see Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman ).

Meaning is therefore often motivated through metaphor, metonymy, and image schemas, not only at the lexical level but also in syntax and morphology.

Verb–particle constructions are a notoriously difficult aspect of English to acquire for second-language (L2) learners. The present study investigated whether L2 English speakers are sensitive to gradations in semantic transparency of verb–particle constructions (e.g., finish up vs.

An important problem with phrasal verbs is that there are restrictions firstly on the place of the particle and secondly on passivizing phrasal verbs.

Relative to the former restriction we will see that the more figurative a phrasal verb is, the more it forms a tight unit, and the less verb and particle can be split. For instance, the following.

The ‘focus on the verb’ approach can be used to provide data for learners to look for common features of meaning in groups of phrasal verbs.

In a given group they should be able to see how the basic physical meaning of the verb is extended metaphorically by the preposition. In the present study, the word order of(1a), in which the particle is positioned adjacent to the verb, will be termed construction1, and the word order of (2b), in which the direct object is adjacent to the verb, will be called construction2; for ease of reference this is illustrated again here as (10): (10) a.

This innate difficulty is one of the reasons we love using games to teach phrasal verbs. Like with prepositions, the best way to learn phrasal verbs is to use them again and again, and this repetition is automatic when playing games.
